Jennifer Macklem grew up outside of Montreal. From an early age she was interested in the natural world, and often explored the shoreline of the Saint Lawrence River collecting shells, driftwood and observing the changing water and ice conditions. Later, as a teenager, she spent several formative years in Paris, France. After studying in Europe, she returned to Canada where she completed a Masters of Fine Arts at the Université du Québec a Montréal. Macklem has taught Visual Art in several post-secondary institutions in Canada, and is currently an Associate Professor at the University of Ottawa.

Jennifer Macklem has followed an artistic trajectory marked by research and experimentation, where she expresses her continual love of the outdoors. She has created video projects, installations, paintings, drawings, and public art in artist-run, public and gallery spaces in Canada and overseas.
